Netacea Bot Management Magento Integration Introduction
Netacea is a market-leading bot management solution designed to detect, prevent and respond to the growing sophistication of emerging threats that non-human traffic poses to web-based applications.
Netacea’s Fastly/Magento plugin utilises the power of Fastly’s Edge computing (provided to Magento customers) to deliver a full-featured, server-side bot management solution, integrated into the existing infrastructure without the need for client-side code changes.
The Netacea Fastly/Magento plugin requires an active Netacea API key. This API key can be obtained by contacting Netacea via our website or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
How the Magento Fastly integration works
When customers opt to use the Netacea Fastly/Magento plugin, all visitor requests that are destined for the customer’s Magento deployment will be processed by Netacea to check for potential threats and to apply the appropriate actions to the traffic.
As standard, Netacea offers proactive analysis and support before the service is activated. The Bot Experts team works directly with our clients to understand current usage patterns, threats and risks posed by bots as well as bot traffic that should be considered as trusted. This ensures that the Netacea platform is optimally configured to minimise false positives and false negatives, maximising protection from threats and minimising impact on legitimate visitors.
Once activated, the Netacea Fastly/Magento plugin will see and stream activity data to our platform for analysis. This allows Netacea to constantly monitor and assess visitor activity to identify known or emerging threats.
When a new visitor makes the first request to the protected application, the Netacea Fastly/Magento plugin makes a request to Netacea Bot Management to determine whether this visitor is identified as a threat. Netacea Bot Management uses multiple layers of analysis to decide whether any mitigative action should be applied to this visitor:
- Is this visitor a known threat or a trusted source for this website and across the Netacea network?
- What is the output of Netacea’s behavioural analysis of visitor activity?
Netacea is constantly analysing and updating its assessment of visitors so will regularly recheck the status of visitors to catch threats that have been identified after their first request.
Any mitigations identified will be automatically applied by the Netacea Fastly/ Magento plugin. If no action is to be taken against this visitor then functionality is delivered as normal. Once this check is complete, a cookie is set for the visitor to track that this check should not be repeated for a configured number of seconds.
Please note: when the Netacea client cookie expires and the visitor makes a subsequent request, the cookie value will be re-issued and set again.
Implementation – Netacea x Magento
Implementation of the Netacea Fastly/Magento plugin is quick and easy to complete, however there are some prerequisites that must be in place before this is activated.
- Customers need to ensure that their Fastly version is 1.2.131+ or higher. That is the version where the Netacea Edge module for the integration is added.
- Customers will also need to open a support ticket with Magento to request Fastly to enable POST within their environment.
- Customers will be required to have obtained the relevant API keys from Netacea to complete this integration.
Enabling the Netacea Magento plugin
To enable the Netacea plugin, customers will need to log in to their Magento admin console.
Once in the console, navigate to:
Store>Configuration>Advanced>System>Full Page or Cache>Fastly Edge Modules
Click on “Manage” in the top right corner and the Netacea Edge Module should be displayed here. If not, please click on the “Refresh” button. After refreshing the screen, you should be able to see the Netacea Module.
You will then need to check the “Select” box next to the Netacea Edge Module and then click “Save.”
When this has been completed, in a table under “Manage” you will see the Netacea Edge Module, click on a wheel icon and you will be asked to provide API keys. These API keys will need to be provided to you by the Netacea team for you to complete the integration.
The plugin configuration is now complete, and Netacea Bot Management should be active.
